i wanted to take a minute to give me readers an idea of the differences in the attention to detail that europe has compared to what i witnessed in santo domingo. it seems like every country has some sort of national monument to pay homage to their heroes of the past. the picture to the left was taken at the altar de la patria/ altar of the nation also known as tumba de los padres de la patria/ tomb of the patriarchs of the country or more simply the national mausoleum. built in 1976 and made of white marble, it is a fitting memorial for these dominican heroes. these three men were juan pablo duarte, francisco del rosario sanchez, and ramon matias mella-all pivotal in the dr's strive for independence from spain. i am not trying to take anything away from their important contributions, but would you think that they would at least put a bit more effort into lining the octagon up with the tomb. (take a look at the bottom portion of the whole and you will notice what i mean) it looks as though they disregarded all precision just to get it finished. you will see when i mean when compared to this photo of
the napoleon bonapartes tomb in france. he is buried here at las invalides and though you cannot fully tell by the photo, believe me when i say it is flawless. he is not just in one coffin, not two, not three, but seven separate coffins-talk about taking care of a national hero. it also goes without saying that the tomb is placed in the exact center directly under the gold plated cupola that mimics the grandore of st peters basilica in rome. napoleon did not even give the french independence, unless you call it independence from their selves. he did however give the french hope, unity, and a since of pride and self-importance that was not felt during the years leading up to the french revolution. he was so influential, he was even able to convince an army designed to keep him out of france to fight with him, retake france, defeat the british, autrians, and russians, actually take moscow (never done before) and ward off all three armies with only a handful of men for a significant period of time-a feat only mimics in history by the 300 spartans.

in retrospect, all these men were historical bad asses, overcoming great odds for the betterment of their people. why cant the dr at least build a monument the right way to signify this?
