after training today i went out in search of some street grub. by this time at night i was tired and hungry and in no mood to cook. the grocery stores were closing this was was my last resort. i have been reluctant to eat much off the streets or even the smaller local diners for fear of the food quality, but tonight i swallowed the pride and set out to subdue my craving.
turning left down duarte from my hotels entrance i quickly found a hideaway bakery that i had walked by again and again over the past few days, each time wondering why i had not stopped by already. in europe, these places are usually on the top of my do-to list especially paris and vienna. tonight was the night, the time had come, i was going in. not only was the food cheap, it was good as well. for RD$50 (about $1.40 US money) i grabbed a pint of chocolate milk, my favorite post workout drink, and a pastry with what i hope was filled with ham and cheese. not only cheap but delicious...a winner in my book of cheap eats.
next stop, ice cream. the dr has some big shoes to fill after all the gelato that i have eaten over the years in italy. there is an ice cream chain called bon which serves a very good frozen custard. they make each one custom to the customer. i went with a cookies and cream feeling that is always a safe call. there was a hint strawberry from the customer ahead of me which added a nice hint of added flavor to the dish.
lastly, and this may serve as a warning but do not eat the corn on the cob from the street vendors unless you enjoy pieces of salt the size of boulders covering the outer surface. no shit right, do not eat corn on the cob from the street i know, but it looked so good. i took three bits and through it out into one of those garbage piles next to the nearest lampposts. what can i say, i have learned to fit in already, next up using the street as a restroom.
